School for Exceptional Young Talents

The School for Exceptional Young Talents is a certificate awarding, after-school music education programme, and it is open to especially gifted students of piano, violin or cello aged 10 to 18, available in English (or German, based upon previous agreement).

The main objective of the programme is to discover exceptionally talented young musicians early in their musical studies and provide them with the help necessary to further their abilities, so that they can reach the highest possible artistic level.

Children of 10 to 15 years of age (to be) enrolled at an elementary or junior high school in Hungary are eligible for application. Applicants under 10 years of age may apply with the permission of the President of the Liszt Academy, given on a case by case basis. Students can stay in the programme until they reach 18 or leave secondary school.

The School for Exceptional Young Talents offers courses for young pianists, violinists and cellists. (Courses of other instruments might be available in exceptional cases. Application to such courses is possible only with the permission of the Rector, and the acceptance of the student requires unanimous agreement of all teachers of the School.

Over the age of 15 students of the Bartók Béla Secondary School of Music may apply with the special recommendation by the relevant department. Such applications also require the permission of the Rector and the acceptance of the student is only possible with unanimous agreement of all teachers of the School.

Applicants must participate in a main subject entrance examination and an aural test.

Old Academy, Concert Hall (1064 Budapest, Vörösmarty utca 35.)

It is possible to rehearse from 8 a.m. before the examination.

For all candidates, the instrumental exam is followed by a solfége examination.

Piano accompaniment at the exam may be provided by the Liszt Academy if requested in advance by submitting the list of pieces and/or sheet music as well.

A) Main subject

Piano:

one polyphonic piece by J.S.Bach
one complete classical sonata
one significant romantic piece
one 20th century or 21th century piece
one virtuoso etude

Violin:

one etude at a difficulty level of a Mazas etude
a solo piece
a movement of a concerto

Cello:

one solo piece at the choice of the candidate
one or two piece(s) with piano accompaniment

B) Solfége examination (aural test)

Aural test: singing of note intervals (up to an octave).
Knowledge of triads: major/minor, diminished/augmented and their inversions
Informal conversation about the folk music of the candidate's country (analysis of folk songs).
