The French Revolution had a significant impact on music, particularly on the genre of opera. By the late 18th century, the flames of Romanticism were already evident in the works staged at venues such as the Théâtre Favart, the Salle Feydeau, and the Paris Opera. Composers from all over Europe came to present their works in the French capital – including Mozart, Gluck, Salieri, Cherubini, and Johann Christian Bach. Some of them chose to make Paris their permanent home. This defining revolution in European history deeply influenced the art of every composer, doubling their inventiveness and appetite for experimentation, and profoundly renewing vocal writing and musical structures. It is hardly surprising that even Beethoven found great inspiration in this truly “revolutionary” style.
