The Hidden Treasures of the Liszt Academy series invites concertgoers to (re)discover musical gems in celebration of the Academy’s 150th anniversary. The concept behind the concerts is akin to a kind of musical archaeology. Curator Balázs Fülei has metaphorically dug a trench spanning the past century and a half, unearthing an extraordinarily diverse collection of findings: various chamber ensembles take the stage, and previously unknown choral works are brought to light. As part of this six-concert series, compositions by former professors of composition at the Liszt Academy – many of them rarely, if ever, performed – are presented by current students and faculty of the institution. This is an encounter with 150 years of artist-teachers in Solti Hall, which, during the lifetimes of the featured composers, was known as the Small Hall. This evening features the 19th century through the music of Robert Volkmann, followed by a transition to 20th-century works by Zoltán Kodály, Emil Petrovics, Ferenc Farkas, and Lajos Bárdos. The hope is that, following this experimental journey through time, performers will incorporate these rediscovered pieces into their regular repertoire, honoring the creative legacy of their forebears.
